Waste doesn't simply disappear, it has been dumped and carefully hidden in numerous places over time. Today,
these 'landfills' have often been transformed into functional landscapes, that can barely be recognised as waste dump.
'DUTCH WASTESCAPES' puts these extraordinary places in the Dutch landscape on the map. The publication shows the new landscape made of waste on the one side and the past hiding underneath on the other. A 'wastescape' is a mirror, showing how we deal with our waste and the world in which we live.
DUTCH WASTESCAPES is a 2023 graduation project for the Graphic Design department of the HKU University of the Arts Utrecht. Read the accompanying thesis on wastescapes here!

In 'Circular Communities', pioneering, collectively supported initiatives are central, aimed at closing resource flows at the neighbourhood or district level and thus contributing to the transition to a circular economy. For the analysis of these different initiatives, the researchers - urban planner Els Leclercq and architect Mo Smit - developed a unique approach: the Circular Value Flower method. This method helps to organise the joint closing of resource flows (materials, energy, water, biota, nutrients) on a neighbourhood scale and provides insight into the added value (economic, ecological, social, cultural, aesthetic) that can be realised within the built environment.

Exhibition concept and design
What is freedom? Does freedom mean being able to do whatever you want, or is freedom impossible without restrictions? How do these two extremes relate to each other? 22 second-year Graphic Design students have researched this boundless theme, gradually forming their own vision. The result is ‘Speelveld’ (playing field), an exhibition in which each student highlights the subject of freedom in a personal way.
Freedom is also central to the design of the exhibition: the form of presentation explores the relationship between the visitor and the work on display and gives the visitor the freedom to move the work around. Speelveld is a dynamic exhibition with a wide range of topics ranging from self-censorship, the situation of undocumented people, the value of play and the sad fate of the dove of peace.
